| RAYMOND ST. JACQUES has had along and varied career that includes acting and directing films, extensive work in theatre and some memorable roles in television. As the Street Preacher in They Live, St. Jacques plays the role of a blind man who is able to discern what the sighted cannot see, and who pays for his awareness with his life. St. Jacques was born James Arthur Johnson in Hartford, Connecticut. He became involved with acting through his participation in a production of Othello and was immediately drawn into the world of the theatre. An accomplished fencing master, St. Jacques went on to perform in many Shakespearean festivals and to train other actors in the art of swordplay. Although St. Jacques made his film debut in 1964 in Black Like Me, his breakthrough came in 1968 when he played a major supporting role in The Comedians, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. He followed this role with the films Up Tight, If He Hollers Let Him Go, The Pawnbroker, Mr. Moses, Mr. Buddwing, Madigan, The Green Berets, and Cotton Comes to Harlem. In 1969 St. Jacques received the NAACP Image Award for Best Motion Picture Actor. He also played the regular role of Simon Blake on TVs Rawhide and in 1973 was cast in the TV miniseries Roots. St. Jacques directed the film Book of Numbers in 1974, in which he attempted to accurately portray the life and times of black Americans during the late 1800s and starred in the television film, Sophisticated Gents. |
