Rick Baker

RICK BAKER, the man responsible for John Carpenter’s special-effects make-up, was born in 1950 in Binghamton, New York. He is probably the best-known special-effects wizard in Hollywood, creator of such dazzling effects as the Cantina sequence in Star Wars and Michael Jackson’s werewolf transformation in the video Thriller.

Baker’s film credits span nearly 20 years, represented by such classics as King Kong, An American Werewolf in London, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Harry and the Hendersons, Coming to America, Gorillas in the Mist and Lorenzo’s Oil. He has received several nods from the Academy of Arts & Sciences: Academy Awards for An American Werewolf in London in 1982 and another for Harry and the Hendersons in 1987; and nominations for his work in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan and Coming to America. Additionally, he was awarded an Emmy for his work on The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, and a BAFTRA Award for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan.

Baker has a considerable presence on television, utilizing his talents on the CBS series Beauty and the Beast, NBC’s Something is Out There and the Fox television series Harry and the Hendersons.
